To the right of Les Rambles you'll find the Barri Gotic, the city's historical nucleus. From Barcino, the Roman name for the city, you'll still find many remains: part of the walls, temple columns, tombs...you can visit many of these in the Museu de l'Historia de la Ciutat in the Plaça de Rei, a plaza you must visit. Much has change since the perfect Roman squared urban planning, up until today's chaotic streets and alleyways that have remained intact since the 19th Century. Even movies set in medieval times have taken advantages of the Barri Gotic's aesthetics to film sequences. Visiting Barri Gotic is to lose oneself for hours and find rocks with hundreds of years of history: the Catedral de Barcelona with its magnificent cloister and 13 oca plants, the Plaça de Sant Jaume with the Ajuntament (City Hall) and Generalitat de Catalunya (the Catalan Regional Government), the Jewish quarter, the Plaça Reial (which is ideal to find places to have drinks), and the Portal de l'Angel, a shopping street de excellence. It's a neighborhood full of locals and tourists alike where you'll always be able to find a new corner to visit.
