Are you coming to study in Granada but aren’t sure if this city is right for you? We managed to interview Granada’s local who is also our property checker, Cristina. As she was born and raised in Granada, we asked her if she could give us some insider tips on the city’s hidden gems and how to make the most of The City of Tapas, as she calls it.

What do you like most about living in Granada?

Granada’s unique combination of Spanish, Moorish and European culture is something that’s rarely seen in any other cities. Even though I’ve lived here all my life, I’m constantly discovering new and exciting things. This city has an excellent hippie vibe that is noticeable throughout. Great student atmosphere will always make you feel welcome and you will have a chance to get to know people from all around the world.

Cristina’s go to spot for:

An authentic meal: Granada is the city of tapas! Any tapa served is free with your drink (99% of the time). You can try Los Diamantes on calle Navas, very popular for its fish tapas. Cafe Botánico, on Calle Malaga, is also a good choice as it has a good mix of Mexican, Italian, Spanish and oriental food.

Drinks with friends: El Bar de Eric is one of my favorites. Nice tapas, good music, fantastic style… It’s also a meeting point for musicians and different artist of the city.

Photo source: nesthotelsgranada **Impressing your date:** Walk up to Mirador de San Nicolas at night – it’s a great spot to watch the sunset and you will have the best views of The Alhambra

After you have a stressful day: I like to go to Hamman Baths. I sit back, relax, listen to arabic music, have some tea, try the rooms with different temperatures, book a massage, … And after that I treat myself to a glass of wine in one of the restaurants near Paseo de los Tristes.

Which areas of the city are your favorite and why?

I really like Realejo – it’s a traditional neighborhood with beautiful buildings and many bars and squares just waiting to be discovered.

You can spend hours shopping in the city centre, where you’ll find plenty of smaller and bigger shops, along with the best ice cream at Los Italianos. Centro Jose Guerrero is a great option for anyone who enjoys various exhibitions and cultural activities.

Cristina’s top tip for Granada is to “bring comfty shoes and experience this city by foot. Explore the narrow streets, walk up to Sacromonte, enjoy the views and get completely lost – it’s the best way to really make the most of what this city has to offer.”

What are some secrets of the city not many people may know about?

One of most memorable things you can do in Granada is visit The Alhambra at night – the city lights and inspiring views will take your breath away.

Photo source: volvovecto.wordpress I also suggest you visit Muralla Nazarí in Albayzin, built in 14th century for Granada’s defense purposes – it may not be a very famous spot, but it’s impressive and definitely worth visiting as it features great views of the Alhambra and surroundings.

What was your favorite property you visited with Spotahome?

The one bedroom apartment with great views of The Alhambra and a fantastic terrace, in Carrera del Darro. It’s just a perfect long-term getaway!
