Schaerbeek: There’s a lot more to this district than its 'City of Donkeys' nickname. While donkeys can still be seen in the Josaphat Park, this neighborhood also features beautiful cherry-tree-lined streets. Schaerbeek is often crowned as an equal to Notting Hill, but it beats the famous London district with its reasonable real estate prices.
The western part of Schaerbeek is home to various communities including Turkish, Moroccan, Spanish, Congolese and Asian. In the 20th century, this area was one of the most beautiful districts in Brussels, attracting many artists such as René Magritte and Jacques Brel.
The tremendous architectural heritage features many Art Nouveau and Art Deco houses. These include the Maison Autrique, the Town Hall and the gorgeous train station that now hosts The Train World, a brand new museum devoted to railway history. Schaerbeek is also a very green area. In The Josaphat Park you can enjoy after work parties. In the ‘Moeraske’ at the northern border of the district, you can even jog in a nature reserve!
Schaerbeek is becoming very trendy. Residents enjoy a rich social life with many cafés, brasseries, and restaurants to choose from. Our favourites include the 10:30, the Babelmet, or Le Barboteur, a unique beer bar. For a healthy brunch, check out Les Trouvailles de Louise, L'Estaminet or Serendipity. Looking for a restaurant? Go for The Brasserie Cochaux with its huge terrace or Chez Marraine for a home made hamburger.
With such a lively nightlife scene, it's important to stay in shape. In Schaerbeek, you will find Kinetix. It's the largest fitness club in the Benelux, and has a private 30m pool and loads of collective classes including Pilates, yoga, aquagym and Zumba.
Last but not least, shopping lovers will be happy to spend time in Dockx Bruxsel. It's a new shopping centre that opened in Schaerbeek in spring 2017. There, you will find plenty of stylish boutiques, voguish shops, restaurants, and even a cinema.
