Realejo was once Granada’s judería, or Jewish Quarter and is characterized by whitewashed houses, and high walls that cover the houses’ terraced gardens (quintessential Andalucian architecture) that’s right at the feet of La Alhambra, the city’s most emblematic historic site. In the Realejo you’ll find a huge concentration of street art, and the city’s most famous street artist is Raúl Ruiz, also known as El Niño de las Pinturas. You’ll find inspirational street art over many of the area’s buildings. There’s a small plaza, Placeta de Joe Strummer (named after Joe Strummer from The Clash), that was named in his honor in 2013 due to his frequent visits in the 1980s and 1990s. Besides the cool street art, you’ll find the Campo del Príncipe, the neighborhood’s nucleus which was a plaza built over an old Muslim cemetery and the Puerta Real, home of the famous Café Suizo, Carrera de la Virgen, and the Basilica de las Anguistias, the city’s Virgin. For students studying at the Centro de Lenguas Modernas of the Universidad de Granada, this neighborhood is ideal as it is the home of this important educational center. Another university area that you’ll find here is the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura in the Campo del Príncipe. If you want to be able to be right next to the Alhambra and Generalife, this neighborhood is the place to be.
