Neighborhood information

Central and a bit posh

Welcome to Trieste.

It's outside the old city, so you won't find as many ancient ruins. You won't find as many tourists either. You will find a scattering of churches, the odd catacomb or burial mound.

Much of Trieste was built in the early 20th century. It's got that chic, classy 1900s elegance. It's everywhere you look.

Small parks, fancy cafés, and terrific restaurants make this a coveted corner of Rome.

Coveted by you?

What can I do here?

Relax – you won't see many tourists. Part of the Trieste's charm is its lack of landmarks.

But this being Rome, you can't escape history entirely. Nor would you want to.

In the Catacombe di Priscilla, you can take a subterranean tour of early Christianity.

Parts of the catacomb are richly decorated, and some of the paintings date from the 3rd century. There are 13 km of tunnels crisscrossing the earth beneath Villa Ada. Impressive.

Villa Ada borders the Trieste area. It's the 2nd-largest park in Rome. Concerts, festivals, and rallies for popular movements – You'll find them all here.

And you have the yummified Italian cuisine.

But you're tired of pasta? (Really?)

Okay. Dolce, on Via Tripolitania, serves up American classics with a Roman twist. Pancakes and burgers, plus – of course – pizza. The mains are great. The desserts are excellent.

Fascinating fact

Sapienza University was founded in 1303. It's now is the largest university by enrollments in Europe. Got there in the end.
