If you want to get paid for Instagram posts or become a brand ambassador you’ll have to put in the effort and creativity. That means you’ll need some great content in a niche you know and love. Having a plan AKA a strategy is also compulsory.

In the recent years, more and more brands are seeing the results of influencer and ambassador marketing. Since we, at Spotahome, work with our own ambassadors every day, we’ve taken a moment to document the key characteristics that make great brand ambassadors. We hope these tips will help you on your journey to become an Instagram brand ambassador.

What is a brand ambassador?

Not so long ago, brand ambassadors used to be celebrities, sports champions and famous people who were paid to represent a brand in exchange of money. With the arrival of social media, that stopped working. Not completely of course, but things have dramatically changed.

The main difference from yesteryear's ambassador and today's ambassador is that the latter are, well...normal people. Yes, like you and I.

One important thing to point out immediately is that a brand ambassador isn't an influencer and to become a great one you don't need to have a billion followers on Instagram, TikTok, YouTube or Pinterest. A great brand ambassador is the person who really loves and understand a brand. In a nutshell, a real brand ambassador is the one who feels a true connection with the brand. She or he talks about it online - but especially offline to her or his family and friends.

A brand ambassador is a person appointed by an organisation to positively represent its identity: raising awareness, increasing sales and driving traffic.

Companies and brands today want ‘real life people’ and not just influencers who talk about it for the time of an Instagram story and then forget about it.

Now that you have a clearer idea of what companies are looking for, let me share what I've learnt in the last few years working on both sides of the fence: being a brand ambassador and hiring brand ambassadors.

Instagram: How to become a brand ambassador

1. Find your USP and niche

What makes you stand out from the crowd? To find your USP, you need to analyse your stats and see what get the most attention. What are your readers reading? Your viewers viewing? What does your audience like the most? Once you've done your homework you understand what is your USP and niche.

2.Build your audience

Once you understand what your tribe likes, build on it and engage with them. Ask questions, challenges and host giveaways. Grab their attention and hold it.

3. Create a plan

If you are travelling and you don't know where you are going, you are probably going to get lost. The same thing goes if you are trying to become a brand ambassador but you don't plan accordingly. You need to plan your content with an editorial calendar in order to show consistency and fresh media on your platform.

4.Prepare a media kit

A media kit is essential to present yourself to brands and companies. Record your stats and data in a nicely formatted page. Use Google Analytics and your insights function to learn more about your performance.

5.  Contact brands and companies

If you really love a brand and wish to work with them, then go for it! But do it nicely. Companies receive dozens if not hundreds emails from people who wnat to get free stuff or wannabe influencers. You need to stand out and approach people not only in a polite manner, but also having already an idea or even a project in mind of how you are going to represent the brand.

6. Never forget who you are

You should only approach and promote brands you really love and not too often. The risk is that your audience will start getting bored of your constant advertisement and shall leave (unfollow) you. And you don't want that, do you?
