Portugal boasts an outstanding quality of life, blending temperate weather, abundant sunshine, exquisite cuisine, a storied historical legacy, and breathtaking natural scenery—all at remarkably affordable costs. Renowned as one of the world’s safest nations, it offers low crime rates and a welcoming, inclusive environment for the LGBTQ+ community. These compelling attributes, among others, have made Portugal an increasingly sought-after destination!
Overall, the cost of living in Portugal is around 15-20% lower than the average across the Eurozone, with its cities ranking among the most affordable places to reside in that part of the world. This affordability is evident, for instance, in the nation's supermarkets and eateries. Moreover, the culture of municipal markets for purchasing food remains alive and well here, which indubitably contributes to the savings we've been discussing.
Portugal offers a wide range of housing options tailored to different locations. In city centres, flats and apartments dominate the market. A distinctive aspect of Portuguese rentals is their classification by bedroom count: a T0 denotes a studio with no separate bedroom, a T1 is a one-bedroom apartment, a T2 features two bedrooms, and so forth.
You’ll need a valid ID or passport to rent a property in Portugal. Additionally, you must obtain a Portuguese NIF (tax number) from the local Finance Office and provide proof of your previous address. Some landlords might ask for a work contract or proof of income to check that you can cover the rent. That’s the usual drill for long-term leases. But with Spotahome, things are much easier for medium-term stays—most of our landlords don’t bother with the NIF, so it’s all nice and straightforward.
It's possible to rent a flat in Portugal without a job, but you'll likely need to show that you can afford it. This might involve having a guarantor, making a significant advance payment, or providing other proof of income. Landlords will want to see that you have a reliable way to pay the rent and not be left in the lurch.
If you rent a property in Portugal with Spotahome, you'll enjoy fantastic flexibility with contract lengths. Typically, you can start with a one-month stay, though some landlords might prefer longer commitments. Each listing specifies the minimum stay required, helping you plan your perfect stay effortlessly.
