The cost of living in Italy varies by region. Down south, it aligns with other Mediterranean countries like Spain or Greece, while up north, it's on par with places like Germany, France, and the UK. However, it's worth noting that wages tend to be lower here compared to those in other countries. Grocery shopping is affordable, but dining out can be pricey, particularly in the north. As for accommodation, rents in large cities and some medium-sized northern towns like Venice and Trento are pretty steep.
In Italy, the rental scene is as varied as a gourmet Italian menu. In the bustling city centres, compact two-room apartments are the go-to, available in everything from shiny new to elegantly refurbished styles. Venture beyond the city buzz, and you’ll find a scattering of standalone houses. For a true escape, the countryside offers stunning farmhouses, each restored with a keen eye for design, where traditional charm meets modern comfort.
An identity document, a tax code, and the last two payslips (or the previous tax return if you're self-employed) are generally required to rent a property in Italy. In addition, non-EU residents must have a residence permit valid for the duration of the rental contract.
Sometimes, it's possible, but a co-signer or guarantor of the contract must declare that they can pay the rent if the tenant defaults.
The price of renting a room in Italy varies wildly, depending on the location and type of property. A room in a provincial city in the south can cost between 200 and 300 euros per month, while in a large city in the north, it can go up to 2,000 euros if it is a double or triple room.
