Paris’s 11th arrondissement is one of Europe’s most densely populated areas. Interesting fact: Place de la Bastille is one of France’s most prominent historical landmarks and was formerly the site of the fortress where upper-class characters such as Voltaire were incarcerated. In 1789, this prison was stormed and destroyed by Republicans in an event that was to mark the beginning of the French Revolution. The 14th of July is now a national holiday that commemorates the storming of the Bastille, a pivotal moment that was to permanently alter the course of French history.
