Erasmus Life at IED and in Rome

IED Roma runs an active international programme through its International Office, with bilateral agreements that connect IED Rome with design, fashion and media schools across Europe and Latin America. Studying at IED in Rome means daily access to the Cinecittà studios, MAXXI, the Cineteca Nazionale and the open-air galleries of Pigneto and Testaccio. The student community is highly international, with networking events, fashion week passes and design competitions running through the academic year.

How to get to IED from Rome city centre

The main pole on Via Alcamo 11 sits in San Giovanni, ten minutes south of Termini:

  • Metro line A from Termini to Re di Roma — eight minutes — then a five-minute walk down Via Faleria.
  • Tram 3 from Trastevere or Piramide stops at Re di Roma in twenty minutes.
  • Bus 87 from the Colosseum reaches Via La Spezia in twelve minutes.

The Pigneto campus is a short walk from the Pigneto tram stop on the Roma-Giardinetti line, and the Testaccio campus sits five minutes from the Piramide metro and Stazione Roma Porta San Paolo.

Common questions (FAQ) about renting near IED

Which are the best neighbourhoods for students near IED in Rome?

The most student-friendly options across the three IED campuses are:

  • Tuscolano — the closest to the main pole; rooms around 650 €/month and the busiest student supply.
  • Prenestino-Labicano / Pigneto — creative, alternative and cheap. Shared rooms 600 €/month and lots of design studios in walking distance.
  • Appio Latino — quieter than Tuscolano, with rooms in San Giovanni and a strong tram and metro grid.
  • Ostiense — the Testaccio campus's natural neighbour, full of street art and student bars; rooms around 696 €/month.

If your priority is the cheapest option, focus on Pigneto and Tuscolano. If you want the trendiest atmosphere, Pigneto and Ostiense are the best fit.

How much does student accommodation near IED cost?

These are the price ranges across Tuscolano, Prenestino-Labicano, Appio Latino and Ostiense, based on the Spotahome Rent Index 2026:

Accommodation type Average price Properties
Room in a shared flat 600 € - 736 € 331
Studio 1,225 € - 1,500 € 81
Whole apartment 1,565 € - 2,410 € 237

The most popular choice among IED students is a room in a shared flat: more than 300 listings, an average price of around 675 €/month and bills often included.

When should I start looking for accommodation near IED?

Three to four months before the term begins. Demand peaks in late August for the autumn intake and early January for the spring intake, so booking by June or November keeps the widest choice open. The Pigneto and Ostiense pockets fill especially fast because they appeal to design and arts students from across Italy.

How does Spotahome verify properties and what happens if the apartment doesn't match the listing?

Every listing on Spotahome goes through a verification process before publication, so the photos and floor plans match the property. If something doesn't add up on arrival, report it within twenty-four hours and the team will help with mediation, relocation or another solution.

How much deposit do I have to pay? And when is it returned?

The deposit is set by the landlord, usually one or two months of rent. On listings labelled "Deposit protected", Spotahome refunds the deposit directly if the landlord doesn't return it within three months of moving out and you've met the contract terms. There are also many properties without a deposit, easy to filter from the search.

Do I need a guarantor to rent on Spotahome?

No guarantor is required to book. You'll need an ID or passport, your IED enrolment confirmation and a payment method. After the landlord accepts the booking, they may request proof of solvency and a SEPA direct debit to finalise the contract.

What is included in the monthly rent? What is not?

The monthly rent always covers rent, the IBI property tax and condominium fees. Utilities such as electricity, water, gas and Wi-Fi are included in many listings but not in all. Personal expenses like groceries, toiletries and optional services such as a weekly cleaner or a parking space are never included. Read the listing description carefully to know exactly what is in and what is out.

Why is Spotahome the best option for Erasmus stays at IED?

Spotahome is the ideal platform for IED Rome students because it offers:

  • Wide selection near the campuses: more than +700 properties across Tuscolano, Prenestino-Labicano, Appio Latino and Ostiense, many less than fifteen minutes from class.
  • Affordable choices: +300 rooms in shared flats with an average price of around 675 €/month and bills often included.
